Eye Candy Friday and Idiosyncratic Socks

I chose this picture for ECF, not because it's particularly beautiful, but because it portrays a time of year I love in our garden. The buddleia has come back into flower. We've had two flourishes this year, which is such a treat as the scent is divine and can be detected from the top end of the garden. The apple trees are of course full of fruit at this time of year and I find them particularly pleasant to look at, and to smell.

Toddler socks are so fast to knit. Here are Charlie's. I would have liked to make them slightly longer in the leg, to line his wellies better but was afraid of running out of yarn. As it was, there wasn't much left over when I'd finished.

These socks have their own little special trademark; they look as though they've been knitted specially for an elf with very pointy feet. Towards the end of the toe I didn't stop putting in the knit rounds between the decrease ones. Of course, this made them long and pointy. Still, if a sock was too perfect you probably wouldn't believe I'd knitted it myself. (Speaking of perfect socks, just look at these - scroll down to post dated 29th August).

News on the Edwardian Lace Shawl next week.

  1. Alice, what size do you do? how many stitches, etc etc, needle size.

Though I'm pretty sure my niece, your namesake, would say NO to hand made socks.

  2. Well, Charlie's feet are a size 9 (quite large for his age). I cast on 44 sts on this occasion, with 2.5mm needles. It's all a bit hit and miss with me, though. I'm not the best person to give sock advice!

I bet if you knit the socks in gorgeous colours, she'll love them. Especially if they're as soft as this Lana Grossa yarn.

  5. Isn't Charlie lovely? He looks all rumpled and his hair is sticking up like a little boy's hair should ;o) I love his elfin socks. Your photo smells delicious! :)

  6. Love the socks, great picture of Charlie :-)

Your garden looks beautiful as always. We don't have buddleia here but had several at the last house. The flowers are amazing and of course a huge magnet for butterflies.

  7. I used to have a variety of Buddleia's in my other garden but so far none here!! . Our garden is a bit of a jungle now but I just don't want to cut things back before until we get all our Autumn colours of the maples etc. Cute socks and an even cuter Charlie.

  10. Oh they are so cute, as is the model. I need to knit some wellie socks too. I notice you say your cast on 44 stitches, how did you decide on that number and which pattern did you follow?

  11. The smell of apple trees and blossoms is divine...lucky you for having one close at hand, and the butterfly bush too. Do you see many butterflies on it?

Charlie's adorable with his socks! Does he like trains? My husband loves them...

  14. I am coveting Charlie's socks. Do they come in a Size 4? Do you take commissions?

Love the garden photo too. I've had my first 3 buddleia flowers on a 1" plug plant I got from Gardeners World a few months ago. I was thrilled.
